Mayan Medicine can be seen as a precursor to modern medicine. On one hand, their study of plants and herbs and their healing effects is very similar to modern day pharmacology. Even the way healers prescribed doses of medicines is similar to the way modern doctors prescribe medicines. There were however many elements of medicine that have thankfully been abandoned, such as ritualised ceremonies and sacrifices to the gods to cure diseases. Mayan medical practices of bloodletting to heal ailments, is another practice that has thankfully been abandoned and is not practiced in todays medicine.
Modern medicine has access to a wide range of materials that Mayan technology was not ready for, yet they managed to improvise. As an example, doctors today use advanced materials to suture wounds. Mayan healers used human hair. Notwithstanding the differences in techniques and technologies, Mayan healers were highly advanced for their time, and while many of their practices disappeared, we can still see similarities between their approach to medicine and the one modern doctors take.
There are even a number of things we can learn from ancient Mayan medicine. Some of these include Holistic healing and the use of cacao as a healthy supplement to a diet, in addition to their extensive use of steam for improving health similar to what we would consider a sauna.
